Common Questions
Do I need a pond to grow lotus?
No! In nature, lotus grow in large expanses of shallow, slow-moving water. But they have been cultivated to grow in watertight containers of various sizes. The smallest lotus grow in pots just a few inches wide. If you have sun and warm weather, you are good to go!
Can I grow lotus in my apartment?
Lotus need about 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. Please don't try growing them indoors, unless you have a greenhouse. They do, however, look fantastic in a roof garden!
What will UBU send me?
UBU specializes in the sale of bare root lotus rhizomes. For each unit you order, you will get one rhizome harvested from our previous year's crop that we have cleaned and cold-stored to maintain dormancy. Lotus grow fast, so, you only need one per pot.
Right now, we do not sell the fertilizer, pots or soil that you will need to plant your lotus. But we can point you to some good suppliers.
How do I plant my lotus rhizome?
We have a complete guide for you! See here to learn what you need on hand and how to plant your lotus once it arrives.
Is lotus invasive?
Nelumbo Nucifera, also known as "Sacred Lotus" is not native to the United States and, if improperly handled, can be invasive. We implore our customers to be responsible gardeners. Never plant our rhizomes in open waterways. Restrict them to containers or isolated ponds.
That being said, while sacred lotus spreads quickly by root propagation, it is less likely to propagate by seed. If you handle your rhizomes properly, you can be confident that your lotus will stay contained.
There is a species of lotus that is native to North America. Nelumbo Lutea. We look forward to carrying it in the future. So, if you are a landscaper or enthusiast of native plants, stay tuned!
